Child Support in Tampa
Helping Families Throughout Florida
Child support is determined during the divorce or paternity process in Florida. Child support is meant to cover a child’s basic needs, including housing, nutrition, medical expenses, and any other elements needed for the child’s wellbeing. Generally, the parent with the most income will provide child support to the other parent, which is to be spent on the child’s essentials (as opposed to alimony, which is meant to support the less pecunious party after separation).
At Rechel & Associates, P.A., we understand that determining child custody and support can be an extremely emotional matter for clients exacerbated by the already stressful divorce process.
How is Child Support Calculated in Florida?
Both parents are legally obligated to financially support their children, therefore child support payments in Florida consider the income of both parents in an income shares model. This model, as codified by the state’s Child Support Guidelines, asserts that the child should receive support commensurate with the level of the parents’ combined income. Each parent is then assigned a percentage of this sum, which correlates to their respective incomes.
Factors that would influence the child support payment amount in Florida include the amount of time the child spends with each parent (child custody, or timesharing), health care costs of the child (and who is covering these), standards of living, and any special needs.
